What is The Sapper Project?
The Sapper Project is a foundation solution and costing model which we developed to enable private insurers progress residential claims after the Canterbury earthquakes in 2011. Damage to residential areas was significant, and insurers struggled to find an effective way of combining the highly variable geotechnical, site and dwelling constraints presented by each property.
We initially developed Sapper in Microsoft Excel, but quickly evolved to a spatial database with web user interface. This system was then developed to accommodate a similar Costing Model for Retaining Wall Assessments. This is where Sapper demonstrates its real value, as it enables effective collaboration between Engineers and Quantity surveyors. These two disciplines are able to coordinate and complete their work aspects, thus generating comprehensive property reports of damage and remedial actions, including cost estimates, supporting site maps and photos.
Collecting data in a digital medium creates a valuable and intuitive information resource for Engineers, Quantity Surveyors and clients alike.
